Council approves first reading of fireworks ordinance

This past Monday night, the Eagle Grove City Council met in regular session and passed the first reading of ordinance 2017-03 which amends existing code regarding use of fireworks. The document defines three types of fireworks: Consumer fireworks include both first and second class consumer fireworks as defined by Chapter 100 of the Code of Iowa; Display fireworks include any explosive prepared for producing a visible or audible effect; Novelties which would be sparklers, etc.

The ordinance does allow the police chief to grant a permit for display fireworks for municipalities, fair associations, amusement parks and other organizations or groups approved by the City when the display will be handled by a competent operator. No permit will be required for display by incorporated county fairs or district fairs receiving state aid. The display operator or organization must also show proof of insurance. Although they may be purchased within the city, use of any consumer fireworks is unlawful within the city. Use of novelties is exempt from the ordinance.
