Eagle cross country runs in 2A qualifier in Garner

The road to state cross country berths in 2A went through Garner last Thursday, with Okoboji (Milford) taking the team title with 84 points. They were followed in the top five of a 15-team field by Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck with 94, South Hardin with 95, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 101 and Crestwood (Cresco) with 119. The Eagles were eighth with 251 points.

“Our season came to a crashing end, as we finished eighth with no individual qualifiers,” stated head coach Ben Demuth. “While this was not what we wanted for our season, it was a great reminder about the nature of athletics and life in general. I was pleased with the way our guys prepped for the meet, as we had a couple of good practices and were focused on the trip to Garner. I would say that from that point of view we were in good shape. I knew it would take nothing short of a miracle for our team to qualify, as this was a quality meet with three ranked teams and three teams that were in consideration for a ranking based on how they had run this year. There were also some quality individuals competing. Luckily, we have run against many of these teams and knew what it would take for us to have a chance.”
