Eagle Grove Greenhouses, Inc. celebrates 100 years

When John Buhner, Sr. moved his seven children and pregnant wife, Rosa from Fulda, MN to Eagle Grove, IA in 1917, he couldn’t have known the legacy he would leave behind.

As the owner of a greenhouse in Fulda, Buhner was persuaded to move his business to Eagle Grove by Adolph Kubitcheck - who sold him on the idea of why it was a good idea for him to start a greenhouse in Iowa. So Buhner loaded up the greenhouse, piece-by-piece, and his family, and set out on a three-day journey by horse and wagon. When they finally made their way to the new town they would call home on May 20, the entrepreneur purchased land from Frank Lindley. The house that stood there was cut in two with half of it being moved to the north side of the lot to serve as the greenhouse office.

Buhner and his family got to work setting up the greenhouse and prepping the house all on their own, with some consultation by professionals when needed. Roughly $20,000, and a lot of hard work later, he was ready to trade in his hammer and nails for potting soil and a hand spade.
