Eagle track & field competes at Top of Iowa meet

The Eagle Grove boys track & field team traveled to Garner last Thursday for the Top of Iowa-West Division meet. Lake Mills took the team title with 182.5 points, followed in order by: Forest City 114, Bishop Garrigan 64, Garner-Hayfield/ Ventura 54, West Hancock 50, Belmond-Klemme 40, North Union 33.5, Eagle Grove 30 and North Iowa 21.

“This served as a tune-up for our qualifier to also be on this same track,” stated head coach Ben Demuth. “This way we got a layout of the track and got a feel for the competition in a big meet. I thought the guys responded very well, for the most part. Dallas had a good night again. I had a personal goal of seeing him finish top two, and he did not disappoint at all. Leo took advantage of his varsity opportunity and earned an all-conference nod at sixth place. That was the highlight of the the night for me, as he has come so far in just one short season. I am super proud of his work ethic and infectious personality. I was pleased with all our hurdlers for the night they had. Two teams in the shuttle had one bad leg, but our guys just pushed on and it brought them home as runner-ups so that was awesome for them. Mark was strong in the 110 highs, but Tomas had an off night in the 400 lows but still ran to an all-conference placing. I was pleased with most of our relays, as we often were seeded in the slower heat and then came out and won our heat and placed in the top six overall for the most part. It was huge for us to realize that, as that’s what we’re going to have to do at the qualifier in order to place and be competitive. Our guys are a little younger than most teams we compete against, but for the most part they don’t care and just go out and perform hard and that has been the true joy of this season. Hopefully we can carry that over and can be competitive in a very tough qualifying meet.”
