Eagles defeat Rockford in high-scoring game 12-8

Last Wednesday in a home game, the Eagle Grove varsity baseball team was able to score more runs than the Rockford team that came to town and defeated the Warriors 12-8. Ryan Smith led off in the first by taking a walk, and eventually scored on a passed ball. Three batters later, it was three straight walks by John Mosley, Saxon Lyman and Brayden Lyman. Colton Poncin would score Mosley, while Thomas Matthes brought in Saxon.

In the second, Padilla drilled a double to center followed by Mosley doing the same to score him. Saxon then calmly stepped into the box and delivered a shot to the left of center field and over the fence for two runs. Brayden reached on a base hit and later scored on a Poncin single. In the fourth, Padilla stroked his second two-bagger of the night followed by Mosley and Saxon hitting consecutive base hits to load the bags.

Ever have one of those nights when the ball comes across the plate looking the size of a grapefruit that you can smash anywhere you please? That’s probably about what the Lyman boys must have thought, as it was Brayden’s turn to jack one deep to almost the identical spot as his brother to score three more runs.

Final numbers showed Mosley going 3 for 3 with an RBI and four runs scored. Saxon was 2 for 2 with the homer, two RBI and four scored. Brayden was 2 for 3 with his homer, three RBI and two scored. Padilla was 2 for 3, both doubles, with a run scored. Matthes was 2 for 3 with an RBI, with both Poncin and Spencer Espejo hitting singles. Smith, Padilla, Mosley and B. Lyman all stole a bag each, while Smith and S. Lyman used a keen eye in drawing two walks apiece. Padilla, Mosley, B. Lyman and Matthes all took one free pass to first each.
