John Howard Nelsen, Jr,

 

     John Howard Nelsen, Jr, the son of John H. Sr. and Alma (Thompson) Nelsen, was born on September 17, 1930, north of Eagle Grove, Iowa.  He was raised on the family farm a mile from Holmes Lutheran Church and graduated from Clarion High School in 1948.  

 

     On November 15, 1949, John married Beverly Quintus of Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Wright County: Holmes, Clarion, Goldfield and finally, Eagle Grove. John retired as Plant Manager from Hagie/Asgrow (The Upjohn Co.) where he worked over 42 years.

    

      John was a member of Holmes Lutheran Church.   He enjoyed talking to all people, coffee with his friends, and was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved to spend time outdoors growing vegetables and flowers.  He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Vikings, and Wright County, Iowa.

 

    John passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the age of 90 years.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Scott Nelsen, his grandson, Marty Nelsen, and brothers, Roger Nelson (Doris) and Don Nelsen (Joann).  

 

     Survivors include his wife Beverly Nelsen of Eagle Grove, his sons, John Nelsen, III, (Georgiana) of Houston, TX, and Rick Nelsen (Cheryl) of Holmes, daughter-in-law, Teresa Nelsen of Clarion, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, ten step-great-grandchildren, his sister, Janice Soma of Eagle Grove, his sister-in-law, Joann Nelsen of Belmond and numerous nieces and nephews. 

 

     Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 13, 2021, at Holmes Lutheran Church, Holmes, IA with Rev. Jerome Nikunen officiating. Visitation with the family will precede the service by one hour. ~ As many of John’s family members are vulnerable to the risks of COVID-19, we respectfully require face masks to be worn at the service.  Interment of the remains will be at Holmes Lutheran Cemetery, Holmes, immediately following the church service.

 

A luncheon will be served following the interment by Holmes Lutheran Church staff at the church.

 

Donations will be used for the purchase of a memorial bench for all to enjoy the outdoors in memory of John.
