Katherine Marie (Veerkamp) Schultz, the daughter and oldest of twelve children, was born on November 25, 1921, to Herman G. and Philomena (Hessler) Veerkamp, in Duncombe, Iowa. She attended school in West Bend – at the Grotto of Redemption (Saint Peter and Paul Catholic School), where she lived during the school week and would return home to Ottosen on the weekends. Katie always worked hard on the family farm growing up and continued to when she got married.

On November 25, 1946, Katherine was united in marriage with Joseph S. Schultz, at Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge. The couple farmed and raised four children, five miles northeast of Eagle Grove until 1985, when they retired and moved to town. Joe preceded her in death on October 13, 2001.

Katie was a longtime active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church ~she oversaw the kitchen ~ for funerals and events for 50 plus years ~ she always knew exactly how much ingredients you needed to feed any number of people! Many remember her patience in teaching others how to prepare the meals and where everything was. Katie was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and American Legion Auxiliary.

Katie enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, embroidery, and quilting ~ making hundreds of quilts over the years!!! She used all kinds of fabrics ~ from family shirts, dresses, jeans, etc.… and many just given to her ~ but each one was unique and beautiful.
