Lady Eagles win exciting game over Cowgirls on Gump home run

Eagle Grove junior Jozey Gump has already smashed one home run in her high school career, but the second one was even better as it decided the game.

With the score tied at 6-6 with C-G-D in the bottom of the seventh, Gump launched a towering hit over the left field fence as her teammates stormed out of the dugout and the celebration began for the purple & gold in defeating their in-county rival.

“It was back and forth and you knew it would come down to the last at-bat,” stated head coach Jim McLaughlin. “It’s a good rivalry.”

The Cowgirls had taken a 1-0 lead in the first, with the home team tying it up in their half as Hannah Beecher scored on an error. They would match their opponent’s three second inning runs as Marisa Beecher was hit by a pitch to take first followed by sister Maura ripping a two-bagger to score her. Lea Friedl then drew a free pass, and was brought home four batters later on a Kenzie Crail single.
